Looking forward to a great 2017 sailing season!
We had fantastic sailing for Spring Series #7. PRO Chris Kozel and his crew set a nice windward-leeward course in a somewhat shifty S/SW breeze and did a good job getting us four races for the day. The turnout was also impressive, with 11 Lightnings on the line! The competition was tight, as Frank was back on the water after having spent some time in Florida, Nabeel (sailing with Scott & Tom) was in the mix, Rick (sailing with Lisbet and Aaron) were competitive as always, Bobby (sailing with Piercarlo and Jonathan on the woody) were also contenders, and Kirsten, Brian and Christie (on Bobby’s fiberglass boat) made a very strong showing. It was also great to see Bob G (sailing with Lisa-Marie and new sailor Boo Fullwood), Will (sailing with Lydia), Lindsay (sailing with Todd), Jim Van Voorhis (sailing with new sailor Jim Fullwood), Peter Lallas (sailing with Kevin), Jim Lane (with Katherine and John) on the water as well. We even saw Joe Warren come out for a bit, which was fantastic!
Scores will be posted soon. Keep reading for some of the details on what I observed from Sinistra, and feel free to add in your own comments!

With only two weeks of racing left before we put the 2013 series to bed, I thought it was time for an update on where we all stand. Remember that these scores are preliminary. There may be corrections and I have yet to adjust for proper RC redress. Having said that, here we go: Bobby and Team Pandora are still leading the pack as they have all season with a 2.4 average score. Frank and Team Resistance, however, are breathing down their neck with a 2.8. Lindsey and Team Lightnin’ Bug are hanging on to third with a 5.0 average score. But, they need to watch out for Chris and Team String Theory who are right on their heels with a 5.1. Nabeel and team Shadowfax round out the top five with a 5.6 average score. Here are the complete scores:
This Spring see’s some new names at the top of the standings. Bobby and Team Pandora lead the pack with a 1.9 average. Way to go you guys. In second place with a 3.6 average is Chris Kozel and Team String Theory. Third place belongs so far to Lindsey Bach and Team Lightnin’ Bug – 4.3 average. Fourth place is in the hands of Brian Ganjei/Will Philippe – 4.5 average. Rounding out the top five is Frank Gallagher and Team Resistance, who have been charging of late, with a 4.7. Congratulations to the current leaders, now you need to start looking over your shoulders ’cause the rest of us are gunning for you, and remember come fall Team Ariel will be back in action looking for blood.
These scores are provisional. They do not include proper redress for race committee work as that cannot be calculated until the season is over. Also, please note that these are for the Championship Series, not the Spring Series. The Spring Series does not included the races from the Doc Gilbert, or the Spring Regatta which are both included here.
We are about half way through the Spring Series, so I thought everyone would like a peek at the standings as they sit right now. Some new names in the top five so far: Bobby Astrove and Team Pandora are leading the pack with a 1.8 average. Nabeel and Team Shadowfax are in 2nd with a 3.5. Chris Kozel and team String Theory are 3rd with a 4.5 – and they managed that with a hole in their boat! 4th are the so called College Boys; Brian Ganjei and Will Phillipe with a 4.6 (Chris had better watch out!). Rounding out the top 5 is Lindsey Bach and Team Lightnin’ Bug with a 5.1 average score. See the rest of the standings here:
Our Fleet 50 Annual Meeting & Awards Banquet was this past Saturday, February 9, 2012. A very special thanks to Rose Gentile for hosting all of us in her home for another fantastic potluck dinner. We enjoyed some great food, good cheer, and a nice celebration of the 2012 racing season.
2012 Fleet Championship
We had an excellent season, with a total of 62 races run. On any given Sunday there were different winners with several skippers earning that elusive first bullet over the course of the season. As is usual, racing on the Potomac was always exciting, with hard fought starts, crazy shifts, boats in covering duels, and fights for that crucial inside overlap. This year we were pleased to capture a good deal of the action in photos and in GoPro footage, so make sure to check out our photo & video archive.
Congratulations to Rick Welch, Aaron Boesenecker, Piercarolo Brunino and Lisbet Kugler of Team Sinistra! They were the model of consistency putting Sinistra on the line for the vast majority of our 62 races and finishing with an impressive 1.4 average! Team Ariel (Jeff Storck, Bruce Heida, Rose Gentile) finished second with an average of 3.1. Team Resistance is Futile of Frank Gallagher, Bob Gotthard, Mladen Karcic, and some other assorted crew over the season (including Maryann Gallagher!) placed third with a 3.9 average. Team String Theory (Chris Kozell, Liz Williams, Nicole Didyk) were forth with an average of 5, and Team Shadowfax (Nabeel Alsalam & assorted crew over the season) placed fifth with a 6.7 average.
For each of the crew and skipper awards, I have included the award description here as well as the great things that the nominating individual(s) wrote about our winners. Take a moment to read through these nomination statements, and make sure to congratulate our 2012 award winners when you next see them! Keep reading for a detailed breakdown of the awards and winners:
Well, its a wrap. We finished our season in style on Sunday, getting in three races on a beautiful November Sunday. It was a great season this year, especially with all the new blood that joined the fleet. As the season wore on, it became obvious that there is some new competition in town, and next year is going to be even tougher.
We had Eleven boats qualify for the PRSA Spring Series. Congratulations go to Spring Series Champs Rick, Aaron and Team Synistra. Spring Series Runner up are Jeff, Bruce, and Team Ariel. Rounding out the top four are Bob Astrove and team Pandora in third, and Chris Kozel and Team String Theory in fourth.
The Fall Series was a little lighter in participation, but not in competition. Seven boats qualified for the Series which was lead by a boat on fire. Frank and Team Resistance are our Fall Series Champs beating out Rick, Aaron, and Team Synistra in a tie breaker, which leave Jeff, Bruce and Team Ariel to round out the top three.
The Championship Series, which encompasses all the Spring and Fall series races along with the three regatta’s (Potomac Cup, Spring Regatta, President Cup), had 63 races in all. 20 boats raced at least one weekend, which made the competition both deep and tough. Once again it was Rick Welch, Aaron Boesenecker, and Team Synistra who are far and away the fastest and most consistent of us. So please congratulate our Fleet Champs when you get a chance. This years Fleet Runner up, I am pleased to announce, is Jeff Storck, Bruce Heida, and Team Ariel. My goodness, I really like the sound of that! 🙂 Rounding out the top five are Frank Gallagher and Team Resistance in Third, Chris Kozel and Team String Theory in Fourth, and Nabeel Alsalam and Team Shadowfax in Fifth.
