Our Dixie District Sailing Season kicks off this coming weekend with the Moonshine Regatta on Smith Mountain Lake (April 9-10). We will also have PRSA Spring Series #2 on the river. Both PRSA Spring Series #1 and the PRSA Spring Kickoff BBQ were cancelled due to cold temps, high winds, and very low water, so we will hold the PRSA Spring Kickoff BBQ after Spring Series #2 on April 10. PRSA will be providing food and beverages, so come ready to race and come hungry for some great festivities after the racing!
Looking ahead, don’t forget to sign up for the Doc Gilbert Potomac Cup (May 14-15)!
Lightning Fleet Lightning Fleet 50 Invites you to the 32nd Annual Doc Gilbert Potomac Cup Regatta, May 14-15, 2016, on the famous Potomac River at Leesylvania State Park, just outside of Washington DC, where the Potomac is 3 miles wide!
Fleet 50 Members: we need volunteers to help with a number of important tasks so that we can host our signature regatta in Leesylvania! Please email Regatta Chair Lisa-Marie Lane if you can help with any of the following:
- Park Cleanup at Leesylvania State Park on April 30
- Race Committee (1 day or both)
- Shore Crew to help set up Saturday BBQ in the afternoon (getting food prepped and appetizers ready while racers are still on the water)
- Making invitation calls
- T-shirt design
- Registration table on Saturday morning
Congratulations to Frank Gallagher (sailing with Will Summers and Brian Lawrence) for winning the 31st Annual Doc Gilbert Potomac Cup Regatta! This is the first time that both the Potomac Cup (for the overall regatta winner) and the Doc Gilbert Memorial Trophy (for top Fleet 50 finisher) have come back to Fleet 50 for some time! It was a challenging weekend, with very light and variable breezes. We did manage to complete three races, though, thanks to the diligent and persistent work of PRO Bruce Bingman and a very busy RC crew. Beyond the RC, it was a true team effort to organize the regatta, as always, so make sure to thank a Fleet 50 member when you see them for the work that they did in organizing supplies, cooking, transporting things, or other behind-the-scenes work. We couldn’t have done it without you, so many, many thanks!
Now, to the results and the racing details! We were thrilled to have 20 boats at the regatta this year! Thanks to the generous sponsorship from APS we were able to recognize a few individuals and teams beyond the racing awards for top 5 finishes. Those special awards were as follows:
- Most Improved (vis-a-vis 2014): Jim Dillard, beating 8 more boats this year than he did last year. Great job!
- Youngest Sailor: Ed Lane. I understand Ed will be attending Christopher Newport University in the fall, so hopefully his APS gift certificate will help him upgrade some gear as he joins the team there!
- Farthest Distance Traveled: Bill Mauk & crew (coming from FL and NJ, among other places) — it was great to have you join us for the regatta!
- Top Female Skipper: Lisa-Marie Lane. Way to go!!!
- The “just out of the money” award (for 6th place): Jamie Brickell
Full regatta results can be found here and you can keep reading for a more detailed description of the on-the-water action!

Fleet 50 Members: please remember that Saturday, April 25, will be our Park Cleanup Day at Leesylvania State Park. This fun and fulfilling day of service is what we do to be able to use the park and pavilion area for our regatta. Please let Jim Dillard know if you are available to help with the cleanup (firstname.lastname@example.org). We usually work through mid-afternoon and then head over to Tim’s for some seafood and frosty beverages!
We were thrilled to welcome 16 Lightnings to Leesylvania State Park for the 30th Annual Doc Gilbert Potomac Cup on May 3-4, 2014. With great weather over the weekend we were able to complete 6 races in a range of conditions and also enjoy a fantastic weekend of camping and celebrating at the park. One of the highlights of the weekend was Fleet 50’s recognition of Jim Dillard with an Honorary Life Membership in Fleet 50 for all of the work that he has done in supporting the Fleet, the Lightning Class, and especially the Potomac Cup Regatta.
Congratulations to Steve Constants, Mike Constants, and Lisbet Kugler on Brown Eyed Girl for their win in the regatta. It was a tight race for the trophies, as the 1st place spot was decided on a tiebreaker! Complete scores can be found here, and here are a few links to photos as well:
I was on the signal boat for the regatta, and thanks to Dave from Tim’s Rivershore Restaurant & Crab House we had a great view of the action from Propwash, a 1925 Oyster boat. Keep reading for a race-by-race recap of what we saw on Propwash, and feel free to add your own comments to the post!
This Spring see’s some new names at the top of the standings. Bobby and Team Pandora lead the pack with a 1.9 average. Way to go you guys. In second place with a 3.6 average is Chris Kozel and Team String Theory. Third place belongs so far to Lindsey Bach and Team Lightnin’ Bug – 4.3 average. Fourth place is in the hands of Brian Ganjei/Will Philippe – 4.5 average. Rounding out the top five is Frank Gallagher and Team Resistance, who have been charging of late, with a 4.7. Congratulations to the current leaders, now you need to start looking over your shoulders ’cause the rest of us are gunning for you, and remember come fall Team Ariel will be back in action looking for blood.
Fleet Championship Preliminary Scores As Of 06/12/13
These scores are provisional. They do not include proper redress for race committee work as that cannot be calculated until the season is over. Also, please note that these are for the Championship Series, not the Spring Series. The Spring Series does not included the races from the Doc Gilbert, or the Spring Regatta which are both included here.
What a great weekend! Two straight days of good breeze (10-15 from the E/NE throughout the weekend) gave us some tight racing on the course and some hungry and thirsty sailors for the legendary steak & salmon BBQ on Saturday. Those of us that camped at the park enjoyed two beautiful nights out in nature along with our annual pilgrimage to Tim’s for some extra libations on Saturday evening.
Congratulations to Team Constants (Steve, Mike, & Dave) for a strong performance and the overall regatta win. Team Shadowfax (Nabeel, Laura, & Jess) took 5th overall after a great 3rd-place finish in the final race, and thus earned the honor of top Fleet 50 finisher. Overall we had 24 Lightnings and 2 Flying Scot’s compete, making for a great turnout! We’ve posted a couple of photos below (with links to more) to whet your appetite, and a full writeup will also be posted soon, so keep checking the website! Finally, and perhaps most importantly, many thanks to our sponsors — Yuengling and Annapolis Performance Sailing — and to all of the volunteers that made this regatta such a success — we really could not have done it without you!

Fleet 50 Members — please also take note that our annual park cleanup day is Saturday, April 27. This day of service is our contribution to the park so that we can use this extraordinary facility for our regatta. Please let Jim Dillard know if you are able to help out with the park cleanup.
We’ve got some fantastic photos from this year’s Doc Gilbert Potomac Cup posted to the Fleet 50 Facebook page! Be sure to take a look, and while you’re there make sure to “like” our Facebook page so Fleet 50 news and updates appear on your own news feed.
And here is a link to another photo album from Mike Heinsdorf with some great shots from day 2 of the regatta! Enjoy!
On Saturday, we had one “practice start” because the wind made a big left shift and the RC abandoned the race soon after the start. They reset marks and we were off again. The wind was NE and the current was ebbing but by the end of the race it was almost slack. Attempts to get a second race off were thwarted by light winds, threatening clouds, and thunderstorms.
On Sunday, the RC got us off in a light breeze and strong ebbing current. Then the breeze got even lighter and some racers were caught out in the current and could not get across the line within the time limits. The second race was also started in a very light breeze and even though it was 3 short legs only 6 racers managed to get across the line before the wind completely shut down.
Regattas are fun regardless of the frustrations created by the weather. The Saturday night dinner was great. A bunch of racers camped overnight — the Ewing family tent could be an airplane hanger. I heard breakfast was very British. The hot dogs on Sunday hit the spot.
