Fleet 50 AGM & Awards Potluck Postponed!

We are postponing tonight’s Fleet 50 AGM & Awards Potluck on account of the weather forecast.  We will try to reschedule for a Saturday evening in the near future, so please watch the website and email for updated information.

The postponment means that you can still submit nominations for Fleet 50 Awards and for Fleet 50 Officer Positions.   The response to these calls for nominations has been disappointing — of 20 qualifying skippers, only 2 submitted nominations for crew awards.  Of numerous regular crew, only one person submitted nominations for skipper awards.  Part of the purpose of this meeting each year is to recognize our fellow fleet members for their achievements and fine qualities, so please take a minute to think about the past year and submit your awards (scroll down a bit for the links).  Nominations will close on the Friday before the rescheduled Fleet 50 AGM & Awards Potluck.

We also have several Fleet 50 Officer Positions that are still open.  We do need volunteers to help fill these spots so that our workload is spread evenly among our volunteers.  Please let me know if you are interested in any of the following:

  • Potomac Cup Regatta Chair
  • Fleet Scorer
  • Training & Development Coordinator
  • Special Olympics Coordinator

Stay warm and stay safe.  We’ll see you all soon.

Fleet 50 Annual General Meeting and Awards Banquet: Rescheduled for March 21!

Mark your calendars for the Fleet 50 Annual General Meeting and Awards Banquet, which will now take place on Saturday, March 21, 6:00-9:00 pm!  Rose Gentile has generously offered up her home once again for a potluck evening (thanks Rose!).  Please bring a dish to share, some beverages to share, your favorite folding chair, and lots of good cheer!

There are four important things you should do between now and the party:

  1. Sign up for the Potluck!  Make sure to list the number in your party and the food/beverages you are bringing (so we can get a good mix of appetizers, main courses, salads, side dishes, desserts, and beverages).
  2. Submit your nominations for Fleet 50 Awards. Each award is described below and also on the nomination form.  You may nominate more than one person for each award (just re-visit the link).  This is always a fun part of the annual meeting, so make sure to nominate your fellow fleet members!
  3. Submit your nominations for the 2015 Fleet 50 Board of Officers.  We are accepting nominations for all of the board positions (click here for position descriptions).  As a volunteer organization, we work best as a fleet with a full slate of officers.  The workload is minimal, especially when each person takes on just a few tasks.
  4. Pay your dues!  Now is the time to make sure that you are all paid for the 2015 sailing season.  Fleet 50 dues are $20 (skipper dues only) and PRSA dues are $90 for skippers and $25 for associates (crew).  Bring your checkbooks to the banquet, or pay online.  If you are paying by check, you will need two separate checks.  Take care of this before we start racing and you’re set for the whole season!

Annual Meeting & Awards Banquet Wrap-Up

Our Fleet 50 Annual Meeting & Awards Banquet was this past Saturday, February 9, 2012. A very special thanks to Rose Gentile for hosting all of us in her home for another fantastic potluck dinner.  We enjoyed some great food, good cheer, and a nice celebration of the 2012 racing season.

2012 Fleet Championship
We had an excellent season, with a total of 62 races run. On any given Sunday there were different winners with several skippers earning that elusive first bullet over the course of the season.  As is usual, racing on the Potomac was always exciting, with hard fought starts, crazy shifts, boats in covering duels, and fights for that crucial inside overlap.  This year we were pleased to capture a good deal of the action in photos and in GoPro footage, so make sure to check out our photo & video archive.

Congratulations to Rick Welch, Aaron Boesenecker, Piercarolo Brunino and Lisbet Kugler of Team Sinistra! They were the model of consistency putting Sinistra on the line for the vast majority of our 62 races and finishing with an impressive 1.4 average! Team Ariel (Jeff Storck, Bruce Heida, Rose Gentile) finished second with an average of 3.1. Team Resistance is Futile of Frank Gallagher, Bob Gotthard, Mladen Karcic, and some other assorted crew over the season (including Maryann Gallagher!) placed third with a 3.9 average.  Team String Theory (Chris Kozell, Liz Williams, Nicole Didyk) were forth with an average of 5, and Team Shadowfax (Nabeel Alsalam & assorted crew over the season) placed fifth with a 6.7 average.

Fleet Awards
For each of the crew and skipper awards, I have included the award description here as well as the great things that the nominating individual(s) wrote about our winners.  Take a moment to read through these nomination statements, and make sure to congratulate our 2012 award winners when you next see them!  Keep reading for a detailed breakdown of the awards and winners:
