Sailing instructions

The regatta is to be held on the Potomac River west of Haines Point and is being hosted by the Potomac River Sailing Association and Lightning Fleet 50.
The Washington Sailing Marina located in Alexandria, VA is less than 3 hours from both Poquosin, VA and Long Level, PA.

These races will be governed by the ‘rules’ as defined in the Racing Rules of Sailing 2009-2012. The races are open to all Lightnings registered with the International Lightning Class Association (ILCA). For those with a membership in the Dixie District this regatta will serve as a qualifying regatta for the Lightning North American Championships to be held at the Houston Yacht Club, Houston, TX from August 4th-10th, 2012. Skippers and crew must be members of the International Lightning Class Association. Skippers are encouraged to join or renew and to obtain crew memberships prior to the regatta at http://www.lightningclass.org.  Additional rules governing eligibility and participation shall be as defined in the ILCA Rules Governing All Lightning Class District Championships. All boats will be required to have matching sail numbers on all main and spinnaker sails used in the regatta.

The Dixie District Championship is scheduled as a six race series. One race will constitute a series. If six races are completed, a single throw-out will be granted. As a qualifying regatta under the RRS 70.5(a), scoring will be final and decisions of the protest committee will not be subject to appeal. Scoring will be conducted according to the Class rules governing Championship regattas.

Radio Communication: Use of hand held VHF radios will be permitted for communication from the Race Committee to competitors on a predetermined channel to be identified in the Sailing Instructions. The Race Committee intends to use VHF radio to identify OCS (On Course Side of the line) boats after starts and to communicate with the fleet on the water. Failure to receive a hail, for a hail to be made, the order of hails made, or receive other communications to the fleet shall not be cause for redress. Other use of any communication devise is prohibited and such use shall require withdrawal from the race unless determined by the Race Committee to have been for emergency purposes.

MEASUREMENT:  Bring your measurement certificate.  Be prepared to show that you have all the required safety equipment including a tow line that meets the new ILCA specification.  Be prepared to be weighed.
